We first met this shelter in Kherson at the beginning of the full-scale invasion when they reached out to us for help. Even then, it was clear that this place needed significant support. Under constant shelling, with limited resources and countless challenges, the shelter continued to operate against all odds. Its owner, a young woman named Yana, fought every day to save as many animals as possible.
Yana has always loved animals. She couldn’t walk past a stray dog or cat without helping, and at first, she simply took them home. But as their numbers began to grow, she had to create a real shelter. Today, this place has become a home for 300 dogs and 400 cats.
Life in Kherson is extremely difficult. The enemy shells the city daily, rockets hit residential buildings, and drones constantly circle overhead. Recently, there was even a fire at the shelter. But despite everything, Yana does not give up. She is constantly improving conditions, step by step making the shelter a safer place.
One of the shelter’s greatest needs is warm and sturdy dog houses. They provide protection from rain, snow, and scorching heat, giving the animals a sense of security and their own space. That is why, with the support of our partners Greater Good Charities, we joined the effort and delivered 32 new dog houses to the shelter. We also provide ongoing support with animal food.
The dog houses are already installed and ready to welcome more rescued dogs. These are not just wooden structures — they are another step toward better living conditions for animals that have survived the war, lost their homes, but still have a chance for care and love.
Yana’s work doesn’t stop there. She is actively finding new homes for the animals, even abroad. In recent months, she has successfully placed about 50 animals with loving families, carefully vetting every potential owner to ensure a safe environment. Just last week, she found homes for five more cats, who are now living with caring families.
Yana continues her difficult journey, but thanks to people like you, her mission to save animals grows stronger every day. Thank you for your help in changing these animals’ lives for the better.
